As a person who is born, studied and now working in one of the world's best tech companies, i can actually write a paper based on my experience and analysis. :) Let me stick to the below few points.

1. Unity in Diversity is one thing which we are taught with great emphasis in school. So this gets extended to living in a society with millionares and BPL people!
2. There is a phrase called,"chalta hai" (which i hate the most) and that is applicable everywhere, everyday and used by almost everybody.
3. We are so used to chaos, corruption and all negatives. While people admire Singapore for being spotlessly clean, the same and ofcourse the NRIs come back here and throw banana peels out of their tinted car windows, without even caring about the adjacent 2 wheeler.

And regarding your 400hours effort getting completed in 48hours, i'll first doubt the effort estimates :) Secondly, while i agree that we are brilliant,it is one pocketful... there is still less of innovation happening here...we are still the implementors, not creators. One example is look at the number of Phds produced by the same colleges which spew out so many engineers...even the less number of patents filed by companies from here.

Having said all this, whenever i went onsite longterm, i get country sick and whenever my manager asked me to shift there, somehow i end up saying no because of this stupid country.(and hopefully that is going to change soon)

Baykus, I agree with you completely. What I was hinting at was, should the partner have based her decision on one question alone, because partners are as likely to get it wrong (when it comes to the fit question) as they are to getting it right.

Yes it does appear to be very similar. I have indeed heard of the term "jugaad" being used a lot. Some of the comments in the article do seem to suggest that the word has a negative connotation and usually results in the loss of quality. What the comments fail to address is that sometimes, you just don't have the resources to do top quality work and you have to settle for compromise. This is true in the New World, the Old World and the Emerging Economy.

As someone who entered the Big4 with an advanced degree I can sympathise. And sure, interviewers make mistakes all the time and end up hiring people they feel are like them etc. rather than based on whether that person will be a strong performer.

In the case of people with advanced degrees, tho, it isn't unreasonable to be wary. A lot of people will not transition well from being a respected expert with freedom to do as they please, working on intellectually challenging topics, to what an analyst is most likely to do: boring spreadsheets, bottom of the pile, no intellectual stimulation or responsibility.

Giving people 'a chance' at a company costs a lot of money - the training for graduate programs isn't cheap, you're paying them a salary during this time, and if they leave after 6 months you've not only wasted this investment but you've missed out on having spent this on someone else who would have stuck around.

Don't get me wrong, PhD's etc. fully deserve a chance - I've adapted well and am happy in consulting. But your friend herself accepts that she's happier in academia, which means she wasn't convinced, and it isn't surprising she couldn't convince the partner. The partner got it right.

Firstly, i am no consultant. :)

My thoughts are based on my experience.

As we all know, change is the only constant thing. And in that perspective, Brands needs to evolve or rather adhere/adjust/be relevant to the changing world. So, there is no right or wrong time for this to happen. It should be a continuous process.

Lets take the example of Nokia itself. It started as a Paper manufacturer, ventured into Power generation, then became an Electronics company and now a mobile manufacturer. And if it stops here, it'll be dead by 2014. Having realized that Nokia is now trying to change itself into a Solution provider by integrating the Devices and Services.

Unfortunately, Nokia wasn't proactive enough to start this change early and hence trying to do now in the middle of recession. Good thing is, they have realized that one can't wait for the Boom times to start this change.
